Welcome to the Flagstaff Unified School District! We’re proud to serve students from the greater Flagstaff community. The 18 schools in FUSD fill each day with 11,000 diverse learners from our attendance area of nearly 4,500 square miles - one of the largest districts in the continental United States. School buses travel about 10,000 miles per day and make over 3,000 stops. Highly qualified educators assist students learn the knowledge, skills and character traits necessary to succeed in school and graduate ready for higher education, technical school or the world of work. One teacher, Mr. Robert Kelty at Puente de Hozho, was selected Arizona’s 2008 Teacher of the Year.
We partner with families, community members, business and government to provide world class educational opportunities for every learner. The community has a long history of support for educating its children and provide the resources needed for quality classes and extra curricular activities. Gradutates from FUSD high schools consistently earn in excess of $8 million a year in scholarships to colleges and universities.
FUSD’s dedicated and skilled teachers in 12 elementary schools provide students with a strong foundation in reading, math, science, history and the arts necessary for life long learning. Our middle schools help each student to use foundational skills to explore subjects in more depth, learn about new disciplines, and grow socially as an early teen. The three high schools provide a wide array of course offerings, challenging career and technical education classes, and advanced placement opportunities. Numerous courses offer dual enrollment in both FUSD and Coconino Community College where students earn FUSD and college credit. A wide array of academic and athletic team competitions, performing arts groups, and clubs give students positive experiences that are valued by colleges, universities and employers.
The 2008 - 2009 school begins with many exciting things going on in FUSD. Projects funded by renovation bonds passed by the community in November 2007 are happening. One of the most visable signs of the bond projects is the installation of artificial turf and new track at Sinagua High School. The new facility should be complete sometime in September. Work will begin on the artificial field and new track at Coconino High School in August. The CHS field will be should be completed early spring depending on Flagstaff’s winter weather. Many other health and safety projects have been completed as well, though not readily visable.
I’m looking forward to a great school year full of wonderful opportunities for our students. Thank you for your support of our children!
