Are students in Arizona graduating from high school ready for what comes next?
Solutions Through Higher Education
- The Arizona Board of Regents has launched a campaign to raise the bar for all Arizona students called Solutions for Higher Education.
They have produced videos describing major issues facing Arizona and the nation that are compelling. There is additional information in this slide show.
Note: overall graduation rates in FUSD high schools is above the state average, though there are gaps between demographic groups. Data is lacking to measure how well graduates are prepared for technical school, community college, university or the world of work.
FUSD 2006 Graduation rate data from AZ Dept of Education for all students: CHS 82%, FHS 83%, SHS 85%.
Arizona and national graduation rates from Editorial Projects in Education Research Center, 2007, all students: Arizona: 68%; Nation: 70%
Arizona Community Foundation
- ACF has published information about education education reform in Arizona.
- According to ACF reform initiatives:
“Research shows the United States and Arizona are lagging behind other countries in several key measures of academic performance. This trend could have significant economic and social implications for our state and nation. Because of this, philanthropy is playing an important role in improving public education across the nation.
Philanthropic dollars can do more than supplement and enhance existing programs; they can shape private giving and government spending in a way that creates systemic change for the long-term. The Foundation’s approach to improving education in Arizona is threefold:
Research: We have assembled the most salient, unbiased and comprehensive data available on the state of our public education system into a report entitled Educating Arizona: Assessing Our Education System, Birth – Grade 12, and a companion document entitled Building Our Foundation: Assessing Early Care and Education in Arizona, which focuses on birth-to-age-5 early care and education. Visit www.educatingarizona.org to download the reports and learn more about this research.”
The Arizona State Board of Education approved requirements for more math and science credits for graduation from high school. How about applied math and science? Example from Washington…
Implementing a Science Design Curriculum

This Edutopia video clip, produced by The George Lucas Educational Foundation, shows students at Aviation High School in Seattle, WA, as they complete an engineering design project. Students work in groups on a project-based assignment to plan and design an airplane wing that can withstand a given amount of pressure. Using Critical Thinking and Problem Solving tactics, students devise and test several different wing designs to see which is most effective. Student groups decide how they will work together, and an engineer from the community volunteers his time to help plan and guide the wing design project. Local engineers visit students to check on the progress of their work and give constructive feedback so that students are better prepared for a final presentation assessed by professional engineers.

Authentic assessment for project-based design projects can mean involving outside evaluators who are professionals in the related field of study. In this video clip, produced by The George Lucas Educational Foundation, we see students participating in an architectural design competition. Students need to use their knowledge of math to create a financial proposal, and build an architectural model for the construction of a futuristic school building. Students work in teams to problem solve around a given land-use design challenge. As part of the process, professional architects from the community advise students as they develop their designs, and ultimately act as judges for students’ culminating presentations of their proposals.
